Did you know that Maine has 67 lighthouses and 3,478 miles of coastline, more than California? With its tranquil, peaceful beaches and historic fishing villages, it is no wonder that Kennebunkport, Maine, is a seaside tourist destination when warm weather returns. I visited Kennebunkport in the fall and couldn’t believe how picturesque the town is. My mom and I were on a fall trip through New England, which was one of our stops. Although this time, we split up and went exploring in different directions. Here is a list of things to do in Kennebunkport, along with all the cool photos I captured of this lovely town.

Dock Square
Dock Square is the epi-center of Kennebunkport where you can find boutique and souvenir shops, schooner activities, seafood restaurants, art galleries, and bed and breakfast inns. I had a blast walking around, browsing through the windows, and even picking up my own lobster tchotchkes. The stores are in historically preserved buildings that are wonderful to photograph.
The Marina
The marina in Kennebunkport is a mile from the mouth of the Kennebunkport River on the Atlantic Ocean. This is a hub of activity all day long, and it was interesting to see the different types of boats that go in and out of this marina. Plus, it was fascinating to watch the tide go in and out during the day I was visiting Kennebunkport.
Places to Eat in Kennebunkport
There are plenty of choices to eat in Kennebunkport, and one of the most popular places is the Clam Shack. You can always expect a long line, so your best bet is to go right when they open. Then you can try the lobster roll, among other tasty delicacies. When you’re in Maine, you have to have lobster, and my mom and I had a hilarious time at our lobster dinner at Foster’s Clambake. Now, what did I do for lunch? I walked over the Lanigan Bridge and checked out the non-touristy portion of Kennebunkport. This is where I met up with a couple of people that were on the tour with my mom and me and ate lunch at Atlantic Pizza. Yep, I’m in seafood central, and I’m eating pizza. I’m weird that way. Sometimes when I’m traveling, I like to find something that reminds me of home, and pizza always does the trick.
Whimsy Art Sculptures
On my exploration of Kennebunkport, I came upon this lovely art gallery. The entire lawn in front and on the side of the building was filled with whimsical wind chimes. It was magical to stand next to these art sculptures in motion and listen to the beautiful music they played. Heavenly! Do these look familiar to anyone? Think of the movie Twister.

I wish I had more time to have explored Kennebunkport further. There was so much to see, and I only captured a small bit of how beautiful and photogenic this town is. This is just a snapshot of Kennebunkport in the fall. Let me know what you think of the photos in the comments below.
Bush Compound at Walker’s Point
After leaving Kennebunkport, we drove right past Walker’s Point. This is where the Bush Compound is located. This was where the Bush’s came during the summer, and it was called the Summer White House when President George H. W. Bush visited. Caution: Do not stop anywhere near it as Secret Service will be on you so quick. We just did a drive-by as that is all you are allowed to do.
Nubble Lighthouse
Less than an hour away from Kennebunkport is the Nubble Lighthouse. The Cape Neddick Light has been in service since 1879 and still works today. This is the first lighthouse you come across as you drive into Maine. There is a free parking lot that will get you close to the lighthouse that sits on its own island. It is quite peaceful, although a bit windy, to sit on the rocks and watch the waves batter the lighthouse island.
Places to Stay in Kennebunkport
If you plan on coming up to Kennebunkport for a day or two, then check out the deals you can get below. Kennebunkport is only an hour and a half from Boston and a half-hour from Portland, making it the perfect summer getaway. One of the lovely places that I came across is the Kennebunkport Inn. This is a place that I would love to stay in one day.
